For a company providing a platform for autonomous testing, quality assurance is a key pillar to success. Madelen Ericsson joins the team as a QA expert and has extensive experience in quality assurance, having worked across a wide range of industries and platforms, spanning from web and mobile applications to Windows environments. With knowledge of testing both backend and frontend aspects, Madelen will be an invaluable resource in the QA.tech team.

When we sat down for an interview, Madelen was visiting the Stockholm office, although she currently resides in the warmer and sunnier climate of Alicante, Spain, with her husband Niklas, their son Loke, and their dog named Fox.

The decision to join QA.tech was driven by a combination of factors, Madelen explains.

“As I read through the role description, I was drawn to QA.tech because the role seemed tailor-made for me. The prospect of integrating AI into testing processes struck a chord with me, as I’ve long been intrigued by its potential to redefine how we approach quality assurance. Being able to play a role in shaping the future of testing by leveraging cutting-edge technology was both thrilling and rewarding. Additionally, the collaborative environment and shared dedication to innovation at QA.tech were highly appealing. In essence, joining QA.tech represented not only a career move but also an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a field that I’m passionate about.”

In her new role, Madelen will be committed to enhancing the QA.tech team’s approach to quality assurance. She plans to instill a QA-focused culture, working collaboratively to refine testing processes and tools to achieve the highest standards.

“I’ll be deeply involved in understanding the needs of our customers and working with them to tailor our solutions accordingly. My aim is to contribute practical insights and suggestions to improve our testing practices and ultimately deliver top-notch products and services,” Madelen says.

With a commitment to excellence

With 13 years of experience and expertise in quality assurance and test automation, we’re eager to learn more about her background and what challenges and opportunities she anticipates in her new role.

If you were to reflect on your career, how has the journey been so far and how does your role at QA.tech align with your ambitions?

“In the past six years, my focus has shifted towards AI-driven test automation, recognizing its potential to revolutionize testing practices. This shift in focus led me to establish my own business division dedicated solely to this innovative approach. Through this initiative, I had the privilege of serving a diverse clientele, each with unique testing needs and requirements. In my career, I’ve always made it a point to stay ahead of the curve in QA and test automation. With every new challenge, I’ve welcomed the chance to learn and grow, keeping pace with the ever-changing landscape of the industry. Looking forward, I’m eager to use my knowledge and skills to push the boundaries of AI-driven testing, playing a part in shaping its future.”

“Something that excites me is the opportunity to witness our efforts evolve from mere concepts into a driving force that reshapes the very essence of quality in software products.”

What part of your job are you looking forward to the most?

“Something that excites me is the opportunity to witness our efforts evolve from mere concepts into a driving force that reshapes the very essence of quality in software products. It’s a journey of nurturing a seedling idea, watching it grow, and ultimately mature into a standard-setting influence that defines the future landscape of quality assurance. This process resonates deeply with one of my favorite quotes – ‘Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.’ Throughout my career, this sentiment has been a guiding principle, propelling me to consistently embody a commitment to excellence in every endeavor,” Madelen says, adding:

“Moreover, I’m particularly eager to take on the role of advocating for the importance of testing, even among clients who may initially overlook its significance. I believe in showcasing how early testing can seamlessly integrate into their workflows without sacrificing speed or efficiency, thus fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for quality assurance practices. This aspect of my job offers an opportunity to cultivate a culture of quality consciousness that extends beyond conventional boundaries, empowering all stakeholders to prioritize excellence in their software ventures.”

And likewise, what do you think will be the biggest challenges?

“As I look ahead, one of the significant challenges that I foresee is harnessing AI to generate truly valuable test cases. Despite the potential benefits AI brings to testing, ensuring its effectiveness in this regard demands a nuanced blend of domain knowledge and testing experience. Having been immersed in testing for years, I understand the complexities of software systems, which often require a deep understanding of domain-specific context and potential edge cases that AI algorithms may miss.

Addressing these challenges requires refining AI algorithms to emulate the cognitive abilities of experienced testers. It’s about fostering a collaborative environment where AI enhances rather than replaces human expertise. Striking this balance between leveraging AI’s computational power and preserving human insights is crucial. It’s essential to augment our testing capabilities with AI while ensuring that human judgment remains central to the process.”

“We need more women in this field”

But quality assurance isn’t her only passion. When Madelen isn’t busy with work, she indulges in her love for dog agility, dedicating as much time as possible to training the family’s dog, Fox, with the goal of becoming agility champions. In a parallel life, had she not launched a career in tech, she believes she would have worked full-time with dogs.

“There’s something incredibly fulfilling about the bond between humans and dogs—their unwavering loyalty and boundless enthusiasm never fail to inspire me. What excites me most about dog training is the opportunity to understand and connect with each dog’s unique personality and motivations. It’s a joyous challenge to figure out what makes each dog tick and to tailor training methods accordingly. Witnessing their progress and witnessing the joy they experience through training is immensely rewarding,” Madelen says.

“In essence, working with dogs brings me a sense of fulfillment and joy that complements my professional pursuits in tech. It’s a reminder to embrace life’s simple pleasures and to nurture the connections that bring us genuine happiness.”
